Report of Meeting held in June 2011

The president welcomed our visitors from Roddam WI. She told members that a card had been sent to Rosa Marshall, on behalf of the WI, expressing our sympathy for her sad loss.
Jerusalem was sung.
The meeting was opened with the following business matters:
The minutes of the last meeting – the educational visit to Delaval Hall – were signed (copy available on the information table).
County Day: members were encouraged to consider entering one of the various classes. All entries would be taken to Wooler, and set up by the president, on Friday 28th October. This offers an opportunity to display the skills and talents within our WI. A board was passed around with the information booklet.
Northumberland News: copies of the magazine had been distributed before the meeting started. Members were asked to tell the committee if they were interested in any events or outings.
As the Belford WI coffee morning at Bellshill House is before our next meeting, members were asked to sign up if they wanted to go.
Auction Tea in the Harbour, Wed 15th June: plans have already been made, but Marion Gallon will put final details through the doors of those who have agreed to help.
Walkers Group: the group is continuing to meet regularly as planned. For the next walk on the 14th June, the group will meet at 10.30am, take a bus to Longhoughton, walk to Sugar Sands and along the coast to Craster. Arrangements for the walk on the 28th June will be made by those taking part on the 14th.
WI diaries and calendars: members were reminded that the treasurer would be taking orders for WI diaries and calendars tonight.
WI Group Meeting: members were informed that the next Group Meeting will be at Seahouses Social Club, hosted by Belford WI, at a date to be arranged in September. The competitions will be for craft (a greetings card) and cookery (melting moments).
Next year’s competitions: members were asked for suggestions.
The Speaker
The speaker, John Robertson, former Poison Garden Warden at Alnwick Gardens, gave his talk on ‘Medical Murders’. He kept us enthralled by his descriptions of the poisonous properties of plants and how they have been used as a means of committing murders which are difficult to detect. Records of cases of plant poisoning have been kept from the 16th century, one of the most notorious being that of Dr Crippen who poisoned his wife.
The vote of thanks was given by Gill Twyford.
John Robertson judged the competition entries for a ‘black object’. The winner was Trish Flegg, second Shirley Harrison and third Marjorie Hewitson.
Supper was served by hostesses: Doris Clarke; Ann Mallen; Vivienne Lowerson and Sheila Dixon. This gave us opportunities to talk with guests from Roddam, who said that they had enjoyed the evening very much. During supper the birthday flowers were presented to Ann Mallen and Marjorie Hewitson.  Marion Gallon and Jane Woolley, who were unable to attend, will receive their flowers later. Doris Clarke’s sales table to fund the birthday flowers was a great success.
The raffle was won by Doris Clarke, Vivienne Lowerson and Chris Clark (Roddam).

The final vote of thanks was given by a member from Roddam.
