Report of Meeting held in April 2012
Our April meeting sparked many reminiscences. Members of
“Wansbeck Matters” entranced us with samples of their proggy mats and
Clippy mats. Those I remember from my youth looked nothing at all like
the examples on display. The two ladies explained the history behind
their group as well as how clippy and proggy mat making has evolved
over the years into an art form. These mats are thought to have
originated with the Vikings. Our grandparents recycled materials into
mats in the days before recycling became fashionable when it was
necessary in order to make ends meet. We were then given the
opportunity to have some hands on experience. We may meet up with Pat
and Barbara again when we visit Woodhorn Museum in July.
Members were told that our Annual Tea Day this year will
be July 22nd. We are hoping for a good day as this coincides with the
annual Coastal Run.
We are all looking forward to our annual outing next
month. This year we are going to Floors Castle and plan to stop for an
evening meal at the Bamburgh Castle in Seahouses on the way back.
We are polishing off our walking shoes so that we can
enter the “Big Walk Little Splash event being organised by National.
The secretary was trying to encourage everyone to take part.
Congratulations to Elizabeth Herd who won the
competition.
