Report of Meeting held in April 2013
17 members and one visitor were
present at the monthly meeting in the newly
re-furbished village Memorial Hall. We had returned to the hall after
an
absence of nearly a year, during which time major alterations had been
made.
The hostesses had laid out the beautiful supper table and members began
arriving to admire the changes and fresh décor when the lights went
out. At
first we assumed it was an electrical fault in the hall, but just as we
began
to investigate the fuse boxes, Kevin Brown came to tell us that it was
a
district power cut and the whole village would be affected for several
hours.
The speaker, Andy Griffin, left
promising to return at a
later date. Business matters were
covered quickly as twilight faded. All 16 members voted in favour of
the
resolution to resist the decline of shops in town high streets. Members
were
reminded of the Spring Council Meeting at Alnwick and signed up for: Howick WI quiz on Wednesday May 1st
at 7.15pm; an Indian Cookery demonstration also at Howick on Wednesday
June 5th
at 7.15pm; an overnight trip to Harrogate; a friendly darts and
dominoes match
at the Cottage Inn on Monday 8th April, and the Educational Outing
to Wallington Hall on Thursday 2nd May. The
walking group arranged to meet at 10am on Tuesday 16th
April for a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle, and on Tuesday 30th April
at 10.30am to take the bus to Newton for a walk around Newton Point and
walk
back to Craster. The date and time of the Progamme Planning Meeting was
confirmed
and members were invited to attend (Tuesday 9th April at 1.30pm in
the Memorial Hall). Members were informed about the Lois Parker bursary
at
Denman College.
Kevin returned with his wife Pauline
and offered to make the
tea on their own gas cooker and Joyce Shaw sent home for candles.
Thanks to
their help, we enjoyed the rest of the evening with a candlelit supper
and
plenty of friendly chat.
Thanks also to the hostesses, Fiona
Craster, Pat Jones and
Nancy Nicholson, who showed wartime spirit, keeping calm and carrying
on
despite working in an unfamiliar new kitchen with a couple of candles.
Shirley Tucker won the raffle and the
first prize in the
competition (10 entries), Pat Jones was second and Doris Clarke was
third. The birthday flowers were presented
to Nancy
Nicholson, Alice Green and Heather Lee.
The next meeting on 2nd May is our educational
outing to Wallington Hall with supper at the Dyke Neuk on the way home.
